light and feeding

I have setup an African tank. I have java fern, moss, Borneo fern and various Anubis (SP). The guy at the LFS said, no more that five hours of light a day and feed the fish only five out of seven days. Is this true? It is a twenty with shell dweller in it, an 18 watt bulb from home Depot, no CO2.

I am setting up a 40g, which will have CF light and maybe CO2.

I don't know why a longer photoperiod would be a problem, the reduced feeding if to keep down on nitrates and poor water quality. I don't know much about shell dwellers, but other than that you should be fine with a longer lighting period especially with the low light

I have a 90 gal Tanganyikan cichlid tank, I probably feed 5 of 7 days and my lights are on for about 7-8 hours a day. I also feed usu. 2x a day
