How high to put T-5 off tank

I just bought a T-5HO Retrofit and before i build my canopy, i would like to know how high i should have the lights over the tank. It is 48 watt over a 20 gallon tank

I would recommend hanging it were it can be adjusted if needed.
Anywhere between 6 to 12 inches, start with it higher above rather
than closer, the damage done to the system with too much light
is harder and takes longer too repair than having less light.
So start with it around 10 to 12 inches.

Look at it this way, a T5HO fixture is almost equal to a MH only
without the shimmer, and you don't sit a MH to close to the water

It would be best to use that light as a pendant type fixture, able to be raised at least a foot, preferably more, and with an enclosure that keeps the light deep inside where the spillover light is blocked by the sides of the enclosure. It is really a lot of light for a 20 gallon tank - one of those bulbs, with the usual individual reflectors on each bulb, would be a more practical amount of light.
