So, we've got our 55gal tank cycling w/a decomposing prawn and old carbon filters from our 10gal established tank. It's passed the spike in ammonia and the ammonia is down to 0 - 0.25 as of this morning. The nitrites are at 1ppm and the nitrates are at about 10ppm.

What's next? Do we continue to wait or is it time to do a water change and the tank is finished cycling?

Or do we need to do something else entirely?

What kind of substrate are you using? Anyhow, while your tank is cycling, you don't really have to do any water changes.

Just let it sit around, maybe add a few hardy fish and plants to quicken the cycling process.

Keep testing your water until it shows ammonia-0, nitrite-0, and nitrate-X. X being any number...most preferrably around 5-40...maybe a bit more?

Then test it for the next few days, if the test results show similar for those days and there's no shifts in ammonia or nitrite, then your tank is cycled. Then you can do a water change if you want.
