Wood or steel stand?

I am going to be starting a 280 gal build and am debating on whether to build a wood or steel stand. I prefer steel because it allows for more open space under that tank. However, in speaking with some LFS people that also maintain customer tanks, they warned me that all steel stands, even if powered coated, will eventually rust, and encouraged me to build with wood. I can see how this would be of special concern for SW tanks, but this will be a Malawi cichlid tank with anubias plants. Anyone have experience with using steel stands with fresh water tanks? Is the concern over potential rust a real one over time?

I would vehemently disagree with the LFS. I love the angle iron stands. I've got some that are over thirty years old still going strong. If steel rusts wood rots. And wit today's "wood" stands being particle board and other wood derivatives they'll fail a lot sooner than a metals stand.
The nice thing about an iron stand is that it can be wrapped in a wood skin if you want. Any wood stand you make won't be as strong as the steel.

If you can get a metal stand pre made that would be the best unless you're great with welding.

I'll hop on the metal stand bandwagon too.

I made a metal stand for my 120g 6 years ago and just
rattle canned it black.No rust at all. I used 1" x 1" .092 square
tubing.

edit:add some tabs so it can be screwed to the wall studs.

Carbon composite would allow for the same space as steel and won't rust for sure

What are the dimensions of your stand?
What size is the AL tubing?
What size tank do you have on the stand?
Did you coat the stand with anything?

Sorry. I shamelessly stole the picture from internet. I'll find you the source tomorrow.
