Shipping costs

Would the shipping cost be less/more to just use Styrofoam boxes as opposed to the mailing boxes provided by the P.O. shipped priority?

depends on the weight. 13oz and under can go 1st class which is cheaper. Otherwise, no. Unless you use flat rate, those can be more depending on the weight.

Hi foster,

Although I have not used styrofoam boxes for shipping I have used styrofoam for shipping plants in the past, and if shipping to really hot or really cold locations I still do. First there is the cost of the styrofoam boxes, plus the fact they are heavier than cardboard; both can increase shipping costs. A more cost effective method for me has been to purchase 3/8" or 1/2" styrofoam sheets and cut them to fit the 7"X7"X6" USPS Priority mail boxes and line the box with the sheets.

Although I still use styrofoam from time to time, today I use bubblewrap 90% of the time. I use 7"X7"X6" USPS Priority Mail boxes almost exclusively, put a few packing peanuts on the bottom, line the bottom and sides of the box fully with bubblewrap, add the bags of plants, cover with bubblewrap, add extra peanuts as necessary to fill any voids, then seal and ship. Typically a box with packing and 3 or 4 bags of plants weighs less than a pound and costs $7 or slightly less even when shipping across the country. If a 72 hour heat pack is required I charge $4; the heat pack cost me $2 and the weight of the heat pack usually increases the weight to over a pound increasing the postage.

I will not ship via First Class. There is no tracking or proof of delivery and travel time can be 1-3 days longer which during warm or cold weather can be the difference between receiving healthy plants or mush.
