Root Tabs => 3G Limit?

How many homemade root tabs is safe to put in Mr. aqua 3 gallon bowfront tank with a sand substrate?

I was thinking about filling x4 00 gel caps one quarter of the amount that fits in a single 00 gel cap and then distribute all 4 evenly through out the tank.

What do ya think?

Try one. If the sand is deep enough then you should not be able to test any rising nitrate.
If the sand is allowing more water to flow around the capsule then your tank will show rising nitrates.

Of course the plants may use the NO3 from both substrate and water, so the test shows little or no nitrate rise that you could blame the capsules for.

Sounds good!

I've never used sand only substrate before. Do I need to do anything to maintain it? Is there anything I need to watch out for? Like compacting or whatever?
