When the Purigen beads have started to dissolve and begun turning to dust then it's pretty well useless. Replace it with new product, and please be sure to carefully follow the re-charging directions - so as not to leave it overly long in the bleach/water solution, nor to let it dry out between usages after re-charging.

I've heard of people doing the following:

buying double the amount hey need; replace old with new during canister cleaning day; recharge old; continue the process over and over.

Do these guys let the Purigen dry after a recharge while waiting for canister cleaning? How do they store their Purigen?

I store my recharged purigen in a plastic container or inside the aquarium stand until I use it again. I buy the purigen bags, which are then bagged in a fine mesh media bag before they're used and so far I haven't had any problems.

I've been doing that for years.
It's usually only 2 weeks or so between changes of dirtied tank bags for freshly re-charged bags.
After re-charging and thorough rinsing to remove all traces of bleach, I let the bags sit in a bucket of fresh conditioned tap water until the bags need to be used again.
However, there is no problem if it's stored another way, so long as the Purigen remains damp, and does not completely dry out.
