new to plants

so been fish keeping for over 4 years now and iv only really had plastic plants but iv had to strip my tank down and iv lost all my fish so iv got to start again i have a Windsor corner tank and Im thinking of having real plants this time, iv have a fluval 405 heater air stone and that, Im going for a sand substrate (maybe pool filter sand) as i did have gravel, so just a few questions really what sort of plants are good for beginners i don't really fancy co2 just yet if possible, is liquid co2 just as good and just looking for pointers or if there are any good threads out there i should be reading.
