pruning stargrass

ok to prune stargrass to base stems? its looking messy with dead leaves. traditionally cut top growth but want a clean look. light is build my led dutch at 50%, ei dosing, co2 injection, cannister filter, weekly water changes.

pruning stargrass

Any dead growth can be trimmed, if you are referring to certain leaves being trimmed and not a whole stem that is also fine. Just remember any cuts to the stem will produce new growth underneath the cut so be prepared for heavy upkeep if you a wanting to keep a nice straight stem.

You might want to consider letting it grow out as long as you can stand and trim long pieces, while pulling the old growth out of the tank and replanting the overgrown stems( now clean, trimmed stems that will still be directing its growth to roots and the tip instead of pushing new branches). They will tend to grow slower this way so you can keep them at a more consistent range of height while avoiding all the offshoots that trimming the tips will produce.
