Just starting

Any ideas for plants or how to bring my tank up a notch. Unfortunately I started with fake plants a year ago so I didn't set up with a good substrate.

Six months ago I planted water sprite, Java fern and a sword. I'm using excel tablets for the sword and dosing with excel liquid daily.

Dual T5 HO 6700k bulbs
Eheim 2217 and Aquaclear 30

the substrate is not really natural looking, you don't have much plants and would be easy enough to swap out.

no background or go plain black. the wood and rock look like they were put there and doesn't mesh well.

Bump: too much equipment showing take away from the tank too.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree with the driftwood and gravel. I think I'll get some plants today to fill in the tank, remove the HOB filter and hide the heater. The eheim should be enough alone for filtration.

The substrate and background I can address in the spring when I have to move the tank for new flooring. Hindsight is 20/20.

I like your current tank. I started with a 20 gallon very similar to yours. I even added the same types of plants. I think it is a great way to learn. About a year after that I decided to add my 75 gallon tank that I planned from the start as a planted tank. The experience from my 20 helped me when I went high tech. I still have my 20 running as a low tech tank. It still helps me figure out issues (the right amount of light, a nursery for when I have too many plants in the other tank, etc...). If you are going to redo it in the spring - I would suggest practicing on your layout or plants you want. It is easier doing it with gravel than redoing a different substrate (I know from experience ️).

Heavy root feeders like Swords/Crypts will benefit from root tabs. But they don't have to have them. I know at least one person who has a 75g full of Crypts in just PFS sub and not tabs and the plants look just as good as anywhere else.
But without complete ferts in the water you'll likely have issues of nutrient deficiencies
sooner or later in there. Fish food/waste can support a few plant in low or med light
but once you get the light higher or have more plants they start to run out of nutrients because of their growth. Between now and spring you might want to read a few threads in the Fert section to familiarize yourself/w that. This is about that also.

The shortest distance between any two points is a straight line...in the opposite direction...

Thanks all and I'll get on this links. I have been dosing flourish weekly and excel daily. No science to my dosing schedule so I'll read up some more. The resources on TPT are insane. Once again thanks for taking the time to help.
