Thumbs up Denison / Roseline Barbs for $3.89

So I'm a newb and this isn't a good way to get myself any respect around here, because I know the big stores are sort of frowned upon... BUT.... I just went to Petsmart for some dog bones, and saw that the Denison Barbs were half off of $7.89... and on sale for $3.89! Considering they're like $20/30 at the LFS's I've seen, I thought this deal was outrageous.

They're small, but I like growing fish from babies and seeing them grow. And I got 3 with great color! Oh and the kicker... I went to checkout and the lady only charged me for 1. (I know, but hey, I've donated and paid enough at that store to not feel bad ) So 3 for only $4 total!

OK, so really this is just a tip for those looking and don't have a big grudge against Petsmart. Sale ends tomorrow night I think. Good luck.

(And please don't bash me because I bought at a big store!)

Nice find!

For what it's worth, my local Petsmart seems to do a decent job of taking care of their fish so I've jumped on a couple of deals from them too. I think it just depends on the local staff. I do QT them for a long time though.

I saw this deal the other day to. Pretty amazing if they survive. I wanted some pretty badly but decided against it.

Also, hello there fellow Floridian. I used to live in Wesley Chapel until about a year ago!

You know how Karma works, right? I hope you've quarantined those fish.

So I have a general question. Why is it BBS get such a bad wrap (not counting WM because they are a joke) but every time I go to a local BBS I'm fairly impressed with the cleanliness of their tanks and overall view of their stock.

At least somewhat on equal level with the LFS.

Are fish ordered from different places for BBS compared to LFS? A lot of BBS offer 14 day returns on deceased, seems pretty brazen if they are going to carry inferior dramatically ill fish?

The various chain stores are actually different quality, depending on the manager. They do get policy handed down from above, but there is a certain amount of leeway in how that policy is implemented.

Near me (50 mile radius) there are half a dozen Pet Smart stores that I have been into, and all but one are pretty good, two are outstanding. The worst of the bunch closed a couple of years ago. To me, that suggests that I would be more willing to go into any Pet Smart and probably not be disappointed.

Also near me are a similar number of Pet Co stores. 100% bad as far as live fish go. I am also not thrilled about their selection of other things such as dog food, cat food, supplements for any of my animals or almost anything else. Maybe I go in there once a year, and half the time do not buy anything. Again, IMO this means that all the Pet Co stores are not worth wasting my time.

Basically, though the Pet Co is 1 mile from me, and in a direction I go often (grocery store is across the street) I will drive about 5 miles to go the the Pet Smart instead.

I do not think the help is worth much, though, in either chain. Very rare for any of the stores to hire help that knows anything about fish except what is handed down from above. And that is not fish keeping, it is product selling.

Other stores around here are Mom 'n' Pop types of stores. They also have their good and bad.
Some are so good that they are worth the trip (up to 50 miles).
Some are as bad as the worst of the chain stores.

I think it really is up to the individual to get to know the stores in the area they are willing to travel. Then keep up with what the stores are up to. Change of manager? Change in owner? Moving? Closing? (couple of the best near me have closed :-( )

That fits with my assessment. The same as you I have found PS preferential in quality over the others. I agree with the knowledge level not being quite as high, which hurts novices, but I guess for those who do most of their research outside of the pet store that helps.

In general when I'm going to my LFS or BBS I'm looking more to make specific purchases I've researched thoroughly beforehand.

Granted the LFS has some guys who I know I can talk about some products to, but it seems a lot of them still use products based on what is given to them, although I applaud them stating such things.

I never feel pressured at either BBS however, and I do agree they are product selling and it's shown by a lot of their fish recommendations which aren't realistic fish recommendations.

For me I'm more worried about getting quality product than anything else, the research is my job.

i dont think its as much as how the water clarity as much as what the nitrite and nitrate lvls are and if they even ever do water changes and clean the substrate of its poop. When i was dumb and didnt know anything about aquariums i had a turtle in a 20gallon tank that i only did monthly water changes on and did even clean the poop out of the substrate and u could not tell at all that it was dirty, the water was crystal clear and everything but the second i went to do my water changes it would look like a bomb went off. Im glad im not that way anymore! but we all go through that phase when we are young and dont know better=)

I'm an aquatic specialist at a bbs, one mentioned here already and it really depends. First off you have to think, we recieve fish from wholesale in an unknown condition. Unsure what's wrong with them and shipping adds a bunch of stress making things worse. On top of that there are many policies making it almost impossible to ensure the greatest care for fish.

On topic: saw this else where, unsure why it's a great deal, guess it doesn't interest me though :s.

I've actually bought many fish from my local Petsmart. It's a nice store, and right down the street from my office. The manager of the fish dept is super in to fish, we've had many talks.
I been to many LFSs in my area, still go to them and buy there too, but when you see perfectly good looking Denison barbs that you been wanting for $4 when they are $29 at the LFS, you get them!
Oh and I have maybe lost one fish from Petsmart that I can blame them for.

I bought some also a few days ago for that price! They put the roselines on sale every few months and I drop by Petsmart every so often since I've been wanted more to round out my school.

Great fish. They used to be $20+ each just a year or 2 ago. A steal for $4/each, even if you lose a few due to low quality.

have had great success with Petsmart fish. Much better, in fact, than the fancy LFSs I've done my best to patronize.
