HoB filter on the side?

I'd like to hang my power filter for my 5.5 gallon tank on the right hand side, thus sending the flow of water down the length of the tank (and slightly disguising the equipment when viewed from the front.) Is there any reason not to do this? I've always had a "proper" aquarium canopy before, where the only place to put equipment is along the back, but this seems like a more logical arrangement somehow.

I used to do the same, as a means to place the tank closer to the wall. The only problem, like you say, is a hood fitting. Usually they need support along the two sides, else it might fall into the tank. You might just need to put an extra cross brace across the tank. I agree that it gives better flow across the surface of the tank.

I don't see any reason why you could not do it, besides getting it to fit with your hood. I would say the reason that HOB filters are normally seen on the back is because that's where the tank is normally against the wall, so it's the most out of sight and aesthetically pleasing location for the filter.

Thanks, guys! I should clarify, instead of a glass canopy I'm going to be getting a piece of plexiglass and cutting it to fit, so it shouldn't be any big deal to leave enough space for the filter whereever I want it.

I have the HOB on my 20g hanging on the side, i wanted the tank as close as possible to the wall because it's sort of in a hallway,....I had to design my own glass/plexi canopy to make it fit properly, but it does work!
