do you leave your lights off for one day?

just curious if its necessary or wise? the guy at the LFS says he does on the day he's closed and his tanks are beautifull. i wonder though if since my tank is only a week old that it would be wise to turn them off one day? wondering if theres any benefit/drawback?

I'll leave my lights off for a weekend on occasion.

A timer is a great $10 investment, though.

sometimes a day with limited light calms my fish and leaves them more refreshed the next day...but that could possibly be all in my head too.

I'm with you on that, at least once a week when we go shopping I don't leave my lights on, since I like to be able to watch my tanks [they're right near my computer <3], I usually leave the lights off all day.

So they're in the dark for close to 20 hours [from the previous night, and then all day the next day] until I turn them on at night for viewing/plants, and they seem a lot more mellowed out.

If you don't have plants, sure. Otherwise I don't because it seems to give algae a free day to grow. Although the light is off, the tank still gets ambient light, and low light algae can grow. I think it's best to keep things consistent because algae can adapt to conditions far more quickly than plants. Plus no light means the plants aren't producing any O2 for the fish to breathe or keeping nutrients away from algae.

on hot days I leave the lights off
also after a WC due to more O2 in the water column.
