Is it better to filter water from the top or bottom of tank?

i have a hang on back filter with an extension tube. i could have it take in water from about 6" depth or closer to the bottom. was wondering if theres an advantage to one over the other?

Try to optimize flow for your tank. I don't think it really matters where the filter draws water from, as long as the outlet and inlet aren't exactly recirculating the same water.

If you drain your tank for water changes, you want to make sure the inlet is below your lowest water level.

Put a CO2 diffuser or an airstone in the path of the output. Try this with and without the extension and see which does better at circulating the water.
