fertilizers, Side effects on humans

Hi All,

Does anyone know if there are any dangers in using fertilizers. I have my open top tank in my lounge room and am concerned as to whether metals and other chemicals could escape into the atmosphere.? Is this possible and of concern?

Cheers,

Pat

No, not into the atmosphere. I wouldn't put them in your mouth or rub them in your eye, though. And you might want to skip dosing the same day you go get on an airplane and have to go through one of those "sniffer" thingys (has that ever actually happened to anyone? I mean, a lot of these are pretty common garden ferts, and someone has to have potted a plant or something just before getting on a plane, somewhere, some time...)

I think you're talking about KNO3. you can make a smoke bomb out of it.. I think ammonia is better for making an actual bomb.

I think there are too many generalizations without knowing what you mean by "fertilizers". Certainly some "terrestial" fertilizers 'were' (because they are supposed to be more regulated now, but can still be bought on ebay) made from mine tailings and contained high enough levels of heavy metals to be a health concern when applied to lawns and subsequently handled by children.

Most 'planted tank' ferts can be used safely without too many precautions, but are still not something to be careless with.

We have children 2,4, &7 and I keep mine locked up when not in use

Macros are basically salts, and not much more dangerous than table salt. Use common sense when sprinkling them into open wounds, don't feed them to your loved ones, etc.

Micros are potentially more dangerous since they contain fairly concentrated heavy metals and such.

Lawn fertilizers containing micros are a different thing, google ironite and you will see lots of discussions/opinions.

But keep in mind there is a difference of applying a teaspoon to a fish tank or 20 pounds to a lawn. Do not fear chemicals escaping from your fish tank.
