you can get some great examples for inspiration / lay-out / design ideas, just checking out the images right on google:

or click around on the site and click on user (members) names and check out their journals.
the rabbit hole goes pretty deep so you can literally spend ours window shopping. if you have a question regarding a specific plant just post and a lot of the guys here will let you know exactly what it is, etc.,etc..

Here's are simple layout overviews:

Pick the one that would work best for your room. Then choose the fore-, mid-, and background plants. It usually looks best with at least two plants for each tier. E.g.:
fg: Glossostigma elantinoides, Eleocharis parvula
md: Java fern, Cryptocoryne undulata
bg: Rotala sp. "Green", R. sp. "Nanjenshan"

If your going to do any kind of carpet plant your going to need T5 lights with at least 2W per gallon ( if you buy a fixture from your LFS it can cost at cheapest 80$-90$) and at least dry C02. What plants depends all on how much money your willing to spend. I recommend going to your local fish store and seeing plants you like and looking up there requirements.

What about LEDs? Are they an option for planted aquariums? If I were to get two 54watt bulbs for my 55 gallon tank would that make 108watts or does the wattage not add together when you add another one, I think it would but i'm not sure.
