I was wondering if anyone knows any books or other resources on aquatic plants of the upper Midwest? Or aquatic plants of the US

Smile Collectors Guide?

Wetland Plants of Michigan: A Complete Guide to the Wetland and Aquatic Plants of the Great Lakes State, by Steve Chadde, is excellent.

Joe

Bump: Aquarium Plants, by Christel Kasselmann and Ulf Kotlenga is propably the most plagiarized and I think most useful.

Not sure what you are looking forÖ

Thanks for suggestions Ill check them out, I live in MN and have found quite a few interesting plants in local lakes. Looking for a way to identify them and have an idea of what species to look for.

Smile Worthwhile Effort

Wetland Plants of Minnesota: A complete guide to the wetland and aquatic plants of the North Star State, by Steve Chadde, would probably be an obvious choice. I haven’t read it but I have been impressed by Steve Chadde’s work.

Another thing to consider is posting pictures, with as much detail about place and conditions to site such as this and I am sure there are sites with people in Minnesota who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their states wetlands.

Local groups can also provide guidance as to the legalities and propriety of collection.

Collecting, maintaining and propagating locally collected plants is (for me anyway) an exciting part of the hobby.

I always encourage people to understand and obey the laws. Compliance and gaining permission is usually not difficult.

Generally when it is difficult there is a reason and many times “they” only wish to make sure you are serious.

That is among the reasons I suggest following all the rules (even the stupid ones), document your efforts, trust me when there is a close call on an issue being able to demonstrate your serious intent can make all the difference.

You can also check out your state Department of Agriculture website, very often they have white papers (usually technical) on the flora of the area. Sometimes they are only invasive species but there could be be some plants that you are looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll be sure to check out those books. I have found that I enjoy collecting native plants and have found quite a few species which can be seen in my thread over apc.
