Grinal worm culture. Mites?

Just went to feed from my grindal worm culture and noticed little white mite like things crawling around in there. Don't think they were springtails cause the didn't jump from place to place but crawled, but then again I have never dealt with springtails. Anyone have any simular experiences? Should I worry about them in there with the worms.

Well that's just like.........your opinion man.

The mites & springtails are regular hitchhikers. There's harmless though unsightly. You can bring down their numbers by removing them when they gather to eat the food.

There is a good podcast at aquarimax that suggests using filter floss as a filter in your air holes on the culture to cut down on mite and fly infestation. I tried it and it works pretty well.

Yeah I used to jam a sponge in the air holes but found it sometimes lead to mold. Maybe the filter floss would allow more air flow. How about feeding the mites to fish any issues there?

Some fish will eat the mites, some will ignore it. They'll die either way in the tank.

There's no problems with the mites. I used to have them in my cultures when I used coir. Since I switched over to the soil-less/coir-less method, I rarely see them now.

Ive been lazy feeding my culture, maybe once every 2 weeks. I dont see mites any more. You can starve the population down.
