That is 5, if not higher... You did mean nitrIte right? Your tank isn't cycled yet.

2 fish in a 55 gallon? Going to take months to cycle. Why not get some media from another tank and put it in the filter. Will be a full cycle in a no time at all.

I just cycled my 75 in a week by cleaning an established sponge filter in the tank & adding 10 gals of water from my holding tank along with a chunk of brine shrimp.

HEY! Your sleeves are wet.

Just take some substrate from another tank, put it in a media bag (which cost about a $1 at a fish store) and hang it next to the sponge filter.

Your using one sponge filter for a 55 gallon tank? Hmmm... not sure if that is the way I would go, but to each his own I guess.

Can't tell much about your cycle progression from just a nitrIte level- what are your ammonia and nitrAte levels, also?

You'll know the tank is cycled when your ammonia and nitrite are 0ppm for several days in a row even following a water change.

Unless this tank is heavily planted I'd probably want more filtration and flow in a 55gal than you're likely to get with just sponge filter. You can also add sponge prefilters to canister and/or HOB filter intakes to make them shrimp-safe.
