starting a 15g, need ideas

i just pulled down an old tank thats been in the atic for a long time. the dimensions are a hair over 13 in length and width ways and 21 in tall. i found a calculator online and it said 15.33... g. id like to set this tank up on a stand in my room but i need some ideas of setups for it.

id like some branchy driftwood with a few rocks in with the driftwood. i want something tall in the back like corkscrew val or something along those lines. some java moss on some of the wood would look good also. id like the small variety of java fern in with the driftwood too. maybe some anubias and some variety of crypts in there too? im not sure, any ideas of good plants?

should i use flourite as substrate or something like aquasoil?

i dont have the filter for it yet but ill probably go with an aquaclear 20. most likely no heater (never had one on my 20g and its been fine). the light is a problem though. the tank alreay has a top with a tiny little flourescent bulb in there. i looked on it and i cant find a wattage or k rating though. should i attempt to build my own hood for it?

i might go for some DIY co2 on this if i get it up. id like it to be full of growth but still have some depth even though its not very wide if that makes any sense.

thanks for the help ill post some pics of designs i like if that helps yall help me

The substrate you use probably won't be too important, because the plants you've chosen aren't too nutrient-demanding and mostly don't take in nutrients from their roots anyway, except for the vals and the crypts. So choose a substrate that appeals to you visually. Of course, a good substrate will be beneficial in the long run, and give you more options when you eventually decide to rescape the tank.

Do some research on the fixture you have. You can always switch out the bulb but you wouldnt want to overload the ballast. Switching out the ballast with a retrofit kit is probably a good option. You really don't need much light for the plants you plan on keeping anyhow, though. 25 to 30 watts would probably be adequate. I have a 40 watt over my 10 gallon, and I need to dose ferts and CO2 or my plants develop deficiencies. You probably want less light than that.

I'd go with an aquaclear 30. I have a 20 on my ten gallon and it's not too much. You can always turn the flow down, and it gives you a lot more room for sponge/purigen/filterfloss/whatever you choose.

I think needle-leaf java fern would look great behind the branches. Windelov is also a really great looking fern you could try... I didnt notice it in any of your photos.

Good luck

thanks ill check out those plants. im thinkin of doin a DIY mod to the hood so it will accomodate maybe 2 CF screw in bulbs. got the idea from a link on apc for perfecto hoods. i would be pushing around 40w with that makin the tank at 2.5 ish wpg. id probably set up a DIY co2 for it also.

the plants listed are just plants i thought of off the top of my head bc theyre some that i have in my 20g. id rather branch out to other plants, even if theyre just diff types of java fern etc. anybody know some other plants that would work/look good in my set up?

the tank is 21 in tall so with 4 in of gravel in back id need atleast a 15 in plant for the background. that wouldn't be a prob with corkscrew val but a i already have that... any suggestions?

would 2.6 wpg be high enough to grow some HC or glosso?

lol thats a cool camera.

if i had the tank pushing about 2.5 wpg and i was running DIY co2, would java fern grow fairly fast? a leaf a week would be fast for me cuz ive had some in my 20g for a month and it hasn't gotten any new leaves. i dont run co2 on it though

Sorry about the camera. I really used to own a Brownie camera many years ago. I'm too cheap to buy a digital camera.

I really don't know how fast Java Fern would grow under those conditions. I can tell you this. I have Java Fern in high light/pressurized CO2 aquariums and it doesn't grow very fast in these aquariums. It's faster than lower light though.

FrostyNYC mentioned Needle Leaf Java Fern. Have you used it? I like the way that it looks.

no i have never used neddle leaf java but i agree it does look really good. that would look good nice and bushy with branchy driftwood coming out of it with moss on the wood, then something tall in back.

i still dont even know if i will set this tank up lol, the lighting is whats holding me back right now. the tank is 21 in tall so i need something really powerful to penetrate to the bottom. the stock strip is just a 17w bulb i think. idk how im gonna get that to work... i got a thread about it in the DIY section if anyone wants to chime in there

dam i was told it would get about 5 in, but the narrow leaf java would get a lot taller.

should this only be tied to the wood or can it be planted in the substrate?

heres a pic of my layout plan. the tank is 13x13 in cube thats 21 in tall. the wood is pretty branchy and has some height to it. should i plant the needle leaf as a background plant (dark green) or in and around the wood as a mid ground (lime green)?
