My tank needs help!

In the past my tank has had an abundance of plants growing beautifully but I've never enjoyed the layout or have been very happy with it.

These are pictures of it about three years ago shortly after setting it up.

After many problems(overheating heater, bad bulbs, ballasts giving out, blue green algae, etc.) I had almost given up. I have decided to give it one more go.
This is what it looks like right now.

UGLY. I have the right set-up for this to be very good but I can't seem to get it right. Coralife 24 inch fixture, 2X55watt 9325k compact fluorescent bulbs, Flourite base with laterite mixed in, DIY CO2 with ladder (diffusor on its way), Water chemistry is tested weekly. Oh yeah, the pots are in there because my apistos love to breed.

I would like to revamp the whole look of the aquarium. This is what it looks like from over head. My spelling is bad sorry.

I would like to keep the plants I have maybe get some more. The tank needs more driftwood and some rocks.

I like the look of rocks placed like this, I'm buying some glosso so I can start a carpet. But I don't no what to do from here .

Please help me!

You don't want to put your swords in front. When they take off, will grow to the top of the tank blocking every thing behind them. What size tank do you have? DIY CO2 will help but it's hard to keep at a constant level.
