When you say "sand pit", are you talking about an old quarry or other industrial site? If so, don't use it. The sand would may be contaminated.

If the sand is coming from a natural site, just rinse it well and clean it with bleach to disinfect it.

Put the sand in a bucket with a 10:1 water/bleach mixture. Stir it up so the bleach gets mixed into all the sand. Then put the sand in a bucket of new water with a dechlorinator and let it sit for a few days. It should be ready to use then.

As long as you like. The bleach should kill anything living in the sand pretty quickly.

I just boiled mine. I'm from Colorado and I love the dark sand that comes from clear Creek. So, I got got a few gallons of it washed it thoroughly, took out any sticks or junk and poored boiling water over it. Came out nicely!
