Keeping it cycled

To " transfer" my good bacterias in the tank when I swap out the old filter with a brand new one, how long do I have to leave the old filter media in the old tank until the new media receives the good bacterias ?

I think it is more the question of how much bacteria then how soon.

When just switching filters, I normally run both together for about a week. If you need the old filter for another tank, split the old media between both filters (I assume both are canisters?). If the old filter has a sponge / floss / pad, rinsing it in the tank is good enough in 'normal' cases.

I heard it takes 1 week for bacteria to colonize a new sponge. IME, there are plenty of bacteria on surfaces in an established tank to just transfer the media to the new filter.

MY TANK: Planted 10g; 2 x 10W CFL; Fluval U2 internal filter; MGOCPM/black sand cap

I will be switching HOBS. The old has a bio wheel and the new one has biomax.
