Blackwater Tank and Leaves

Hi: I did a search for and got barely nothing. Is anyone here doing blackwater tanks? I have decided that my last tank is to be a blackwater tank. Amazon biotope. Yes. Hopefully 20 gallons. I plan to talk to my landlord about it today. She should be okay. Anyway, I have a dead maple outside so I was going to use the maple as my driftwood (already looked this up - boil boil boil). I plan on using maple leaves and Indian almond leaves. Anyway, I was just wanting to know if anyone knows how to sterilize the dead maple leaves. Do I boil them or is that bad to remove "beneficial stuff?" I am worried about ticks as I live in the Midwest. Does anyone know how to cycle a blackwater tank? Thanks! dbw

You can boil the leaves if you want. Just be aware that you'll release tannins out into the water and the leaves will break down faster in the tank (which for IALs, is a HUGE pain to clean up, not sure about maple). You can always add the tannin-filled water into the tank after it boils to get that nice, dark brown water.
Cycling a blackwater tank is pretty much the same as a normal cycle.

Just give them a simple rinse and toss into your tank.

Okay thanks. I am so excited. My landlord said it was okay. We have a downed tree in our backyard soo I am ready to go. I wish I had some alder cones.
