Getting rid of an unwanted fish

I made the mistake of taking a little catfish off of my sister's hands a while back. Her kid had gotten tired of their 10g, and this guy was the last fish left alive.

Well, long story short, that little fella is now about 7" long with some serious girth. Way outta place in my 55g, and eating any other fish he can fit in his mouth.

I have asked around and haven't found anyone to take him. No fish stores want a big ugly cat like him. I guess I could put an ad on Craigslist, but I'm not crazy about having strangers come to my home for something like this.

So what would you do in a situation like this? The sucker's so big I could almost imagine frying him up! Hell, I've caught much smaller fish than him in lakes and ponds. But I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of just killing an otherwise healthy fish. And if I did, I'm not sure how I would do it - probably a bag of water in the freezer. Heaven knows he's too big to flush!

BTW - I've seen them on sale at PetSmart labelled Bullseye catfish. The signs say they get 3-5" long. Right!

NOOOO, that's unethical at best, and illegal in most parts of the country.

You can spread diseases, contribute to the development of invasive species populations, get fined, etc etc etc.

Check with your local aquarium clubs, someone there will most likely want it.

Whatever you do, please dont release it into the wild.

Hey ed. There is a LFS here in Skokie that will take him. It is called the "animal store". They have a 2000g tank for unwanted monsters. Hopefully he is big enough to hang out in this tank. Also post an ad on the GCCA classifieds. List it as free to a good home and someone should grab it. Chicagoins are nuts for big fish.

Peace,
Ry

I raise my sword in the air in the battle against clado. I have been beaten in this battle but the war is not over. As my wounds heal I amass another army, an army with many legs, an army of Amano's......

I thrust my tridant into the mass of medusa like staghorn. I am wounded but I refuse to take a knee.

Never dreamt of releasing it.
I'll broaden my search before sending him to the icebox.
