New TAnk getting rid of 75 gallon

Im getting rid of my 75 gallon tank this weekend because im moving and want to start a 5.5 gallon nano. I bought that 27 watt home depot light and now have a few more minor decisions to make. Im trying to keep it kinda low cost and had a few questions

1) shoud I use the soilmaster select from my 75 gallon and transfer it to my nano? If so should I wash it or leave it as is, I think its got alot of mulm in it.
Or should I just buy some eco complete, (Im kinda reluctant to pay 30 bucks for a bag I will only use half of)

2) should I buy the zoomed 502 mini canister filter that people have been using or just a nano Hob filter (I guess If I bought the zoomed I would skip the eco complete and use the SMS, or if I just use SMS I'll buy the zoomed filter.)

3) Will I be limited in the plants I can grow with the home depot 27 watt desklamp? I have another 18 watt fixture I could put on too if I had to, but I dont want to turn this into an algae farm.

4) Finally I cant find any thin, branchy driftwood for a 5.5 gallon, could I just go cut some thin branches off a tree outside boil them and put them in my nano? I guess I would also have to weight them down too.

1. i would use the left over sms because it would save u money

3. u r not limited really im growing lots of different things in mine with the same light. i think it also considers it as a high light tank

4. if you look in a bird section they have manzanita perches which will work and i also got in my tank also

dont know too much about the filter never used it

You might want to research the filter before you buy... I've never owned one, but I think I've read mixed reviews?

I think your lighting should be fine, I'd plan to dose Excel on this tank to be on the safe side with keeping algae at bay (or CO2 if that's your plan). I'd consider your lighting sufficient for "low-to-medium light" plants, with that one fixture + either Excel or CO2.

If you look in the Swap n Shop here on the forum, Badcopnofishtank posts Manzanita wood packages specifically for nano tanks on a regular basis. Prices are good, and IMO the wood always looks great (what I use in my tanks).

If I were setting up a Nano, I'd use Fluorite black sand. I think the smaller grain size would look very nice, and of course black substrate is always my personal preference.

I think whatever substrate you want to use would be fine, however.

The zoomed is a good filter IMO. Perfect for a 5.5 gallon, my one major gripe is that they don't come with quick disconnects that I have come accustomed to...
