New Tank 10 Gal

My parents came up to visit and brought me another tank. We went hiking on the beach today and I got a bucket of coarse sand out of lake Superior. I also picked up several pieces of driftwood and some rock. The driftwood wants to float so im going to leave it weighted down for a while until it sinks and I can arrange it.

I am thinking of making this a cherry shrimp tank with some low light stuff like crypts and such. I have 2 of these crappy 15 watt t8's i can put on top. I had to get some boards from the store to put under it, I was worried about the weight on my crappy dresser the top was already sagging in.

PS Ill remove the planted background tomorrow

My old tank is on the left and the new one on the right

i hope you sterilized it, otherwise you need to do so now and the tank. there are all kinds of nasty things in nature that dont do damage there because of the small numbers, in a tank the effects magnify.

Yeah I thought of that briefly, what should I do just circulate some bleach in there for a couple days?

Its already filled and thats why I added the boards across the top it distributes the load to the sides of the dresser and takes it off the top

I also tested the PH today and I didn't know my indicator solution could turn so blue, I am wondering if the sand is buffering the water and making it really basic. I know CO2 should help in lowering the PH, this tank is more of an experiment for me than anything else.

you dont bleach wood or rocks, it would go into the little pores and take forever to get out. the gravel should be boiled (15 min after the water starts to boil is fine). you can boil the wood too but it might crack, if you think it will crack take it out and leave it in the sun for a day and then turn it over and leave it like that for another day and do that until every part of the wood was exposed to direct sunlight, not shade. the UV will do almost as good a job as the boiling (it wont penetrate deep in the wood though, so maybe boil one peice for 5 min to see what happens, if it can take it the rest of that kind probably can).
