Went to a local landscape supply place(x-quarry) and out of about 20 different kinds of slate, 90% looked rusty. The guy said they had mica in them. Is this good for aquariums? The 10% were more colored and really high priced. Jumped from .04 to .37 a lb. What kind of tests should be run? Thanks

Buy little pieces of the slate you are intrested in and put them in a bucket and measure the changing water parameters if they change at all. Test for carbonates by scraching the rock and dabbing a weak (10%) solution of HCl. But if it really is slate you shouldn't have any problems.

Down here in Arizona I've seen that stuff at a landscape store and was told its called Mexican slate, and is not aquarium safe. I forgot what mineral the rusty stuff was called, but the guy I talked to said it leeches into water. Sounds pretty similar to what you are describing. :?
