ammonia test doesnt change color?!

When I test my water for ammonia (with the API master kit) the water doesnt change color at all. Does this mean I need to put more ammonia in? I've put a few cap fulls in so far.

So first things first, not to sound annoying but did you add both test solutions? To test for ammonia you have two primers you have to add to the test water to get the color.

If so, how long has the tank be setup? Did you fill it up with two water? Almost all city water is going to have some ammonia in it so go ahead and give the water out of the tap a test. The ammonia in your tank should be at least that I would imagine.

If you are working on the fishless cycle, and adding ammonia, be aware that ammonia is bottled in several strengths. You might have one that is more diluted, so you have to add more before it reaches a concentration that the test kit will react to.

Try this:
Start with part of a gallon of distilled water (no chloramine). Maybe 1 cup.
Add a teaspoon of ammonia to that and test.
If the kit does not respond to that there is something wrong with the kit.
