Hey,

Im looking for a good reactor for a ten gallon DIY CO2 setup. Anyone have any suggestions and where I can find it?

Would this be good?

Sledge,

If you only need a reactor, don't bother with the whole setup. Just pick up the bubble ladder http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/...d1=3349;pcid2=.

I'm actually thinking about buying the whole unit for my 10 gal. I just want a little supplemental CO2 for the tank; don't need a full, pressure system. Not too much of a gamble @ 22 bones, and I've seen pos reviews (when used on small tanks).

Sedghammer, what kind of filter do you have on your tank?

I just bought the hagen natural plant system and everything seems to be working out great. I read that you might find a lot of faulty or dud activator packets but if that happens don't worry because you can jus create your own. I would really spend the extra 11 bucks and get the whole system. It looks a lot more better than a 2 liter coke bottle and the system is perfect for a 10 gallon. Ive only had mine for about 2 days now but already im seeing my plants a bit more lush! I only paid 25 bucks for mine @ my lfs and think its a great deal for a nice diy system!

I have the hagen system on my 20 tall and I love it. Definitely worth it to get the whole system. The canister is nice and locks up aritight(very important).

If you have a sponge filter (internal with air bubbling through it) you will have a hard time to significantly increase your CO2 concentration in your tank.

I would suggest you remove the sponge filter and buy yourself an AquaClear mini for you tank. It causes much less water turbulence and therefore minimizes CO2 loss. Also, it can work very well as a reactor. Just feed the CO2 into the filter intake.

Some sponge filters are powered by powerheads and don't require an air pump. IMHO these are probably superior in terms of minimizing surface agitation to the AC mini.

There is no air running through it so there is hardly any surface agitation, maybe it's a "foam filter". I think that I'll get the whole setup as dealing with the maintenance of the 2 liter bottles seems like a hassle.

I like the AC mini idea. Here's a few post testifing how great they work was reacotors:
https://www.plantedtank.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6884

I use a AC 150 running at max output without any modifications to reduce surface agitation...and it gets me 17ppm CO2 with a very slow DIY CO2 (1 liter pumping 6 bubbles/min).

Sounds great Rolo! To the people who use the Hagen system, what level of CO2 are you at? I'd like a comparison between the two because I might be going for a 36 watt kit over my 10 gallon.

Not sure what the bubble rate for the Hagen is at. I stopped looking at the the ladder after the first month or so, but it definitely works if you're interested in running a higher light setup on that 10. I ran it on my 10 with 72 watts over mine and it did reasonably well. That was before I relocated my 10 gallon and beefed up my substrate to the point now that I can't stick that darn ladder back in . So, at the moment, it looks like I'm gonna have to go to a full blown system....

I'm not familiar with Earl May, Petco or Petsmart does carry the Hagen/Nutrafin Co2 System, for about $30, but you can find it online for $17 plus $6 shipping. I've seen it in smaller fish stores for as high as $40!
