What's is this?

Started co2 and high lighting for about 4 weeks, however, some plants are getting this black deposit (algae? ) on them. I have SAEs which fixed my BBA problem but they don't seem to be consuming this. I am only supplementing with iron and some KH booster at the moment. Advice really appreciated.

Your pic isn't entirely clear but I am pretty sure what I'm seeing is black beard algae. It shows up, especially on swords as black tufts of short hair around the edges of the leaves and can then go on to cover the leaves and just about everything else in the tank.
BBA shows up in most tanks and the cause is usually said to be fluctuating CO2 levels. You say your SAE's took care of your BBA problem but from what I've read SAE's won't eat BBA, I know none of my fish would touch it. I minimized my BBA, and keep it at bay, with Excel. Here is a thread talking about its use;

Your problem does not appear to be bad yet so I wouldn't recommend using a full 3X dosage since Excel can be hard on some plants and fish.

Hi Steve

The BUSHY bba is gone (or virtually gone).. This stuff is more like diatom in appearance, not the bushy appearance of BBA. I may see the odd small tuft of it occasionally but that is it.

Since getting the SAEs the BBA has virtually gone. It was WAY worse before. At first I thought they would not consume it, but I have actually witnessed them chew it down. AMAZING!

The stuff in the pic seems like a black kind of diatom algae. Zoom into to the pic for a better view. Just wonder if ottos would clean up this stuff? Or if the plants are missing micro nutrients?

Cheers
