Will Lobelia cardinalis persist in an aquarium, or will it live for only a few months? Is it the same plant that you can buy at the garden centers? What is its growth rate and difficulty?

Thanks, Urk

I have the dwarf one and it has been in my aquarium for many months...quite happily. Not sure about the normal one...and not sure how bit the normal one gets. I hear pretty large.

Stick with the "Small form"/Dwarf variety. The large one will get, well, large and is the version commonly found in ponds & bogs that grows out of the water & had large red flowers.

The wild one stays pretty small. The rosette stays near the ground, it's the bloomscape that gets tall.
There are many cultivars and crosses with related plants in the garden trade. Some of those can get pretty large. I have a cross plant in the garden from great blue lobelia and cardinalis and interestingly enough it gets larger than both parents. Must be hybrid vigor.

I also have the dwarf variety in my tank and it's pretty easy to grow also, and it doesn't get too tall at all (looks great in my 10 gallon). I started out with 3 plants and have since topped off two of them .
