Fish died, Water Change?

Hi:

Okay two fish died that I bought yesterday. The other fish I bought are swimming happily. I plan to take them back today and exchange for new ones on the guarantee.

Anyway, I feel really bad about this. I actually felt like crying. I can't believe it.

Hmm.. if a fish dies (they were two very small tetras) do I do a water change?

Thanks. I feel like I ask a lot of questions.

Assuming it's from stress and not disease, it won't be necessary if you removed the carcasses immediately.

What kind of fish?

They were rummynose tetra being added to perfect water chemistry. I know those are sensitive. I think it was stress. I knew to remove the carcasses right away and since I am being all perfectionistic about this tank, did so, and put them in a bag for the store. I did not even buy them from petsmart/petco.

*sigh* sad. I feel kind of silly being sad, but I was really sad.

Sorry, but these things are expected. Half my Otos died within two days but I knew this would happen from experience. That's why I bought twice the number I wanted knowing half wouldn't make it.

Yeah you're right.

I just came back from the store, gave them the old ones, and got two more.

THESE seem a lot better. They have already joined the school of the other ones, unlike the other two who lingered in the corner.

Sometimes the fish you get were not 100% perfect and were going to die anyway. You can sometimes notice imperfections in the way they look.

yeah, for some fish its a hit or a miss. usually, its a miss. at least you got two better ones
and no, you don't need to do a water change. its not necessary in this case

this is why its important to visit the lfs many times and often if you plan to buy fish from them. get to know how they care for their tanks, when they get fish in, and watch for ill fish when you go.

Also before i buy fish I watch the tank for close to an hour to see how they are acting and to sex them if possible ( based on age). they gives me a chance to see healthy active ones vs ones that seem to be struggling if any of them are.

Wow that is intense. Don't they look at you strangely for staying there for so long (one hour) and just watching the tank?

It seems like good advice. It takes more time and hassle to have to go back with the dead fishes.

Whenever someone asks me how I keep my fish tanks running perfect, my reply is. I've killed a lot of fish. Its a fact of the hobby fish will die. Tanks will need to be tore down and redone. A random disease may, wipe a tank. It,all happens and you'll get used to it.

I also do this lol, if it's expensive they know, the first time I ask I won't buy. Its probably around the 5th trip I end up buying the fish. I always wait if possible to scope their tanks out.

I don't really agree with the above statement... Yes there are some random losses due to unknown circumstances, but in the end the health of your tank is on you and those of us who put in the time and effort do so with great results and very little fish loss.
