How do you vacuum

A Planted Tank?

It's hard to get between the driftwood and plants, first of all.

I have mineralized top soil with Black Diamond Sand as a cap. I have this brown stuff that is sitting on top of the sand in places that looks like mulm that would accumulate in the bottom of the tank. I don't know if it is mulm or if it is some of the mineralized top soil that made it's way to the top.

Do I put the gravel cleaner just over the top of the sand or do I push it down into the substrate like you would gravel?

You don't want to push the siphon down into the dirt. This would most likely upset the dirt and cause it to leech out into the water. It might help to gently swirl the siphon above the area you want to vacuum and it should just pick the stuff up.

I just wave the siphon gently a little bit over the surface to stir up any loose debris, I don't push the siphon down into the substrate.
