Vallisneria Americana outdoor observation in my tub pond

I was out working with my tub pond, and happened to notice the Vallisneria I had planted in a container in the bottom. While they are not very tall and long like the ones in my various tanks, I noticed that they are a deep brownish red.

The plants are propagating, new plantlets in the container, the leaves look and feel healthy, just not green.

Makes me wonder how much light they would need to get this way in a tank. I live in the high desert of California, where it already has been over 100, and lots and lots of sun.
