General CO2 & Drop checker question

So, there's 383 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide

Way more than what's in the water.

So why does the drop checker only change to green & yellow in the water and not in open air?

383 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere. The dropchecker measures pH, not CO2 directly. You can derive CO2 if you have a known kH associated with the pH reading. So, if you have a 4dkH solution, you have a standard to read your CO2 concentration with. With 383 ppm of CO2 in the air, a certain amount of CO2 dissolves into water when exposed to air. The dropchecker measurement of ppm of CO2 is ppm of CO2 dissolved in the solution inside the checker. This is going to be less than the air around it. So, when you put it in open air, the CO2 in the air is about 383 ppm, and the CO2 is about 3-4 ppm. When you put the checker in the water, the CO2 in the air (that bubble or gap between the checker solution and the water, is much higher, since you are injecting it directly into the tank.
