I think the guy i bought this tank from screwed up. I just measured the inside of my tank and it comes to 48Lx12Wx18D. My calculations tell me this is only 44.89(45)gal. Is this right? I've never heard of a tank this size before.

Thanks,

Some companies use the outside diameter of the tank to measure the volume. I have read that some tanks sold as 55 gallons are accually 40 gallons. The person selling you the tank probably thought it was truely 55 gallons.

What Urkevitz wrote. Standard OD for a "55-gal" rectangular tank is 48"L x 13"W x 20"H.

I think they measure aquarium volumes just like they do the size of a computer monitor, namely "incorrectly!"

This is what I wrote in another post...

Most tank volumes are calculated by manufacturers in some unexplainable way, taking the largest outer dimensions (including any decorative or functional plastic rims etc) and coming up with a number that way. If you take into account that water goes only INSIDE the tank, that you can't fill it up completely, and that you have perhaps a few inches of substrate, you will find that the net water volume is much less than the tank spec would make you think.
