I really want a big tank... and I really want it to be planted... and I really don't have alot of money. So here is what I'm thinking.

-55 gallon tank (new) $230
-2 AC200 $39.99 each so about $90 with tax
-2 shoplights with 2x40 watts $30 each so $60
-playsand 100lbs $15
-stand DIY $20
-DIY Co2 $priceless$
-heater $15

So if I buy everything new it comes to $430 Canadian.
I say it's not bad. (I'll steal some nice persons cuttings for plants).
Now I figure if I buy a used tank I can probably shave off $150 and for me that is totally affordable. Please tell me what you think.

Just a thought.. your price on that 55 Gallon tank is ridiculous.. even in Canadian funds... I pay $129 for a 45 Gallon tank out here in BC... (so yes, that is in Canadian Dollars)

You can also get sholight fixtures for cheaper then $30.. Wallmart Canada has shoplights for $12 each.. $24 instead of $60..

I would rather go with an Aquaclear 500 over the pair of 200's.. you can use MUCH bigger sponges in a single 500 then you could using 2 or even 3 Aquaclear 200's.... And for the same price

dogg76, if you read the original post carefully he was referring to his items in Canadian funds. The pricing scheme up here is night and day different then the US so its impossible to compare directly.

Keep your eye on the classifieds and swap sheets. Some guy in the local paper was selling a 55 gallon with hood stand and "equipment" for $50! To bad someone got to him before I did. Has anyone else noticed that the listings for "fish tanks" are cheaper than "aquarium". The filter and heater that came with it were most likely junk, but you don't have to use it

I posted this earlier today in another thread...

Quote:
Here are prices for an Aquaclear 500 in canadian funds

Big Als Canada (online) = $74.99 (no shipping price included)
Local Fish Stores = $69.99-89.99

Big Als US (after exchange rate into Canadian Funds) = $41.34

So Big Als, the same store, same product, has a totally differenent pricing scheme in this country. If we order from the states, we pay duty... Its really frustrating.

Basically if you take the average US price for aquarium equipment add another 30-50% to the cost.. thats about what we have to pay.

Its totally ridiculous, but its just the way things are.

Could you get a Filstar Canisterr filter or Marineland canister filter for about the same price as the two Aqua-Clears?

29 Gallon Standard Moderate Light Planted tank
Lighting: 2x27 Watt 6500k P.C. Lights of America Outdoor Fixtures. 2x 20 Watt N.O. Flor. w/ Sylvania Gro Bulbs (9350k I think). Both are retrofited into a diy 12" tall canopy, with a 4" Diameter Clip on fan facing the opening in the back to circulate the excessive heat from the lighting.
Filtration: Tetra Tech 150 (modified to make very little disturbance.
Aquarium Systems Mini-jet for more circulation.

I'm gonna try and buy used. Also, you say I should get an AC500 instead of 2 200s? I thought it was better to get the 2 filters because you could change the media in one and keep the other one going and you get better circulation.

If you intend, down the road to inject CO2, you might want to consider buying something other than an Aqua Clear filter. They are great filters and I love them, but by design, they cause a bunch of surface agitation which gases off the CO2 that has been injected.

If however, you still want to go with one or two, I have two 300s I will send you for considerably less than the prices quoted above. They were used for a short period of time on one of my 55's and did a great job, but I bought a cannister when I got serious about CO2 injection.

How are you supposed to grow plants in plain-ol-sand? At least add a layer of laterite under it, or even better laterite mixed with Profile/Tuface. And why not take a shot at ODNO, with 2-48" tubes you can get 160w! That's great for a medium-light planted tank.

If I were going to buy a new filtration system I would go with a canister type. The filtration area is larger and can be hidden under the tank in a cabinet.
