Question about pearling?

Are plants supposed to pearl the entire photo period? I am getting moderate pearling but only during the last 2 hours of my photo period. I am still only at 2 bps but wanted to know before adjusting my bps any higher.

I see a few bubbles forming on my hc and my amazon swords are "fizzing" bubbles. But only towards the end of the photoperiod. Is this the way it should be?

Thanks,
Brett

It's very normal for the plants to only really start pearling heavily toward the end of the lights on cycle. I start getting a couple of bubbles early on, but about an hour or two before lights out is when things really pick up. Under really intense lighting it can start earlier, as it kicks the photosynthesis process into overdrive, if you will.

Speaking in terms of theory, they're only pearling when the water around that area is fully saturated, thus the oxygen doesn't immediately dissolve into the water OR another theory is that the plants are photosynthesizing so quickly that the oxygen cannot dissolve into the water fast enough.

My experience with pearling has mirrored both those reported here so far. My photoperiod is noon to 9 PM, and I'll start to notice it around 4 PM, and it doesn't really become noticeable till after 7 PM.

But I'm a little surprised that Brett doesn't see it earlier, if it is indeed related to lighting intensity. I'm running less than 2 WPG, but Brett has over 4 WPG. That's pretty intense. Maybe you'd see it sooner if you cranked up your CO2. But remember this: It's not the end all and be all of healthy growth. It's much more important that your plants are growing well than if they pearl.

Mine waited for the last few hours of the day for a while. Oddly, when I switched to a dawn dusk effect (second tube on 2hrs late, off 1hr early) pearling now starts within 5 minutes after the second tube kicks on, every day like clockwork, figure that one out.

I suppose it could have something to do with other problems I was having off and on back when I was blasting all wattage full time. I would go back to full time for a little while to see what happens, but I've almost got my spyrogira kicked and don't want to do anything to spring it back up.

Canoe, I meant 'really intense' to be more like Metal Halide versus Compact Fluorescent. I've often read of the MH users reporting that pearling starts heavy really quickly after the lights come on. I don't have any personal experience with that though. FWIW, I have ~3.5 WPG.

I've got 2.9 if you go by what the manufacturer calls the tank, which is far from actual volume, probably more like 3.4 if WPG could be technical. (192w / AGA65)

mott, how long is the gap between your first and second bank?

Mine is only about 15 minutes, a really quick dusk & dawn, heh.

The species of plants you keep also vary when you see the "pearling" effect. My mosses and rotala pearl before my moneywort, etc.

How do you all get the pearling effect? With 4 yeast c02 systems going and 136 watts of light mine still don't pearl. Or do I need to be paitent and wait until I get my fertalizers in monday and start dosing before they pearl?

Thanks, pretty much like that of jaidexl. I'm going to give that timing a try myself, see if I experience the same phenomenon.

Ferts will certainly help. How large is your tank? 136 watts is a lot for a 30 gallon but not in a 200 gallon

Edit: Also, giving the plants about a month to settle in to your tank's conditions will render more pearling too.
