Help!!!!! Strange unusual betta behavior

Hey guys.
I have had a betta fish for about a year.
About 3 or 4 months ago, I planted his tank.
He seemed very happy and content with his home.
Everyday he would swim up to me, follow my fingers, and jump for food.
However, just today, my betta is just not being himself.
He floats in a corner barely moving at all. He is sometimes on his side but that's while hes on a leaf or something. His stomach is slightly puffed out but it has been like that. Can you guys please help me!?!?!
Is this life threatening for the betta? What can I do to help him?!?!?!?
BTW I got some duckweed about 2 days ago.
It covers the surface and it seems like it was taking up space for him to breathe.
Also, the betta randomly swims extremely fast bumps in to something and just floats.
The tank is 5.5 gallons moderately-heavily planted, and there is an otocinclus in there (I plan to get 1 or 2 more. This is only a temporary home for the otos)

Sounds a lot like bloat...which, sadly, is fatal and difficult to treat. Might be kinder just to put the fish down.

I may be wrong, but I don't think he has bloat or swim bladder. His stomach is not puffed very much and he is somewhat active. However he seems very skittish now. He used to be confident and full of personality. I just do not know what is wrong with him.

I'd take out at least half the duckweed and let the betta have more open water at the surface.

Also, please let us know:

What are the water params (in particular ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)?

What are the params of your tap water?

Did you do a water change or many ANY other changes to the tank in the 24 hours before this change in behavior?

Is the fish flashing (rubbing against the substrate or other objects in the tank?

Did you add the water that the duckweed came in, or treat the duckweed with anything for snails, etc. before adding it to the tank?

Pics would help. Also he might just be constipated. Give him some peas.
