Rocks etc?

I have some rocks I used to use in tanks all the time (not planted tanks). they are mostly petrified wood. Do you know if I can use these or will they react and increast the hardness of the water?

Thanks,
Chris

Obviously we can't comment on the rocks you didn't mention, but since you DID mention the petrified wood... yes, you can use petrified wood. Not only is it inert, but it looks wonderful in aquaria.

As for the other rocks... what other rocks do you have? You could try the muriatic acid test-- just place a few drops of muriatic acid (for swimming pools) in your rocks and see which, if any, start fizzing and foaming. Those are NOT good for the aquarium.

Well, those fizzy rocks are good for African Cichlids.

Petrified wood is mostly quartz, and I agree, they're beautiful "rocks." Don't worry about the metals that lend the color to the quartz, they're locked away safely in the silica and insoluble.

Thanks indiboi,

I just ordered a book, the natural aquarium (book 1), the 2004 aquascaping DVD from AGA etc. once these get in I hope to learn more. I have been reviewing as much as i can here, and have also looked at some of the contect winners in my aquarium size to get some ideas.

Most of the items I need are on order, on there way, substrate, and lights. I have the tank, stand and XP3 filter. So i can get started very soon. I will likely put in a build thread.

Thanks,
Chris

And I agree...petrified wood is 100% safe. I've used it in several of tanks.
