Planting Crypts

I just rescaped my tank, so I had to move a BIG (probably 14"x14") clump of well-grown crypts wendtii to another section of the tank. Now, my question is, is there an easy/correct way to replant these? They are in a huge mass right now, with runners and smaller plants branching off the more mature ones, so it is quite difficult to ensure all the plants and roots are planted firmly in the substrate.

Should I separate and plant individually? Should I trim some of the roots so they are shorter (some roots are extending as much as 15") and easier to plant? I have the mass semi-planted at the moment, with half the plants with roots sticking above ground. Any advice would be appreciated!
