Safe to take black brace off of 5g and 10g aquariums?

I've seem some ADA Style aquariums in which they've taken the brace off of the top and the bottom so that it is glass only. Has anybody had experience with this or heard horror stories? I have a 5.5g and want to take the black braces off. What tools would i need or should i use? methods? thank you

I think the usual agreement is that you shouldn't do it on tanks larger than 10g or so, as the weight becomes more and the support is compromised from the lack of a brace.
Just be careful and if it seems like it's not coming off easily, don't force it. I cracked a 2.5g doing that.
Good luck.

Lol, ringram, I read your post yesterday.

Tonight I just decided to take the top brace off my 2.5g.

Guess what happens? Even being careful and methodical, I crack the glass on two spots near the top.
Oh well the tank will still work.

I've seen the trim taken off quite a few tanks up to the 10g range with no real problems other than the problems of getting it off in the first place.

I'm fairly convinced its more for protection from chips and breakage than anything else on smaller tanks.
