Best lighting options

Hi Everyone!

I have been reading this forum for the past couple of weeks to see if I wanted to try out a planted tank for my 22 month old son's room. After reading for a week or so, I've decided to jump in! I have a 12 gallon JBJ Nano cube that I used for a salt water reef tank perviously that I plan on using. My question is, what would be my best lighting options. When using the tank for a reef, I ripped the top off (read.. broke it accidently and had to...) and bought a JBJ Viper Metal Hailid (sp?) clamp on light. It worked great for my reef. Should I try using this for a planted tank? or should I buy a different lighting system? I have been looking at a few including system that includes a 18 Watt Sun Paq lamp as well as a lunar light? Would that be a good option? Has anyone every used this system before?

Also, what about LED lighting? Does anyone have experience using these with a planted tank?

Thanks in advance for your help!
-Mike and Owen to! Every time we go to the aquarium store he runs right to the fish section and yells FISHY! FISHY! It's great!

What type of plants are you looking for?

Low light: 18 watt SunPaq will be enough

The JBJ Viper will be too much light, whether it's the 70W or 150W version. Cheap LED solutions are being DIY'd, but no stable product as of now other than the expensive Solaris fixture from PFO.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm really just looking to put together some nice lush green plants. Possibly Java Fern or other similar plants. Nothing too crazy. I just want to keep it simple so that when my son is old enough, maybe 3 or 4 he can start taking care of it on his own. I want to start the tank and get it really well established before I give the control over to him in 2 years.

Any reccomendations on plants that would do well in a 12 gallon tank with the 18 Watt SunPaq would be appreciated. I'll also be looking through the threads and pic forums to see about plant choices. I will be using a flourite substrate.
