Who uses a Diatom filter and which one?

I just set up a 24g aquapod and I am thinking of getting a diatom filter to pollish the water from time to time. During the warmer months I also have a small barrel pond (about 25 gallons or so) set up in my yard which I would use the diatom for as well.

Do any of you use a diatom filter? If so which one?

I have an XL diatom. It polishes my tanks and ponds in minutes.

I've used a HOT magnum 250 for many years, and love it, just kind of small for my 125 though.

Another vote for a Vortex XL.

It's very old school and almost a badge of honor to say that you can set one up and have it running clear on the first try.

Like I said, it's an old school design that hasn't changed in over 30 years. It is definitely not a fill-it-and-turn-on type of device. And failure to prime it correctly will result in a tank full of DE powder.

But here's some operational tips I've come up with over the years.

Hahah, been there, done that. But Bill's tips should help tremendously.

And the first time it happens is such a traumatic experience.

Cheap person here, UV filter and/or Purigen.
May take longer than just a few hours, but it works.
