filter media?

I got a magnum 350 canister filter(got it for free) and you fill a basket inside the canister with filter media. It only comes with activated carbon, and was wondering if I should more then just carbon?

Most planted tankers don't use carbon at all, of if they do, then only occasionally to remove tannins and other discoloration. Better to stick with biological media such as lava rock, ceramic noodles, sintered glass, or the like. The fear with carbon is that it will also filter out plant nutrients from the water column.

I, too, have a Magnum 350. I don't know what to put in mine either. I tried the polish insert, and it clogs so fast the filter stops working. The floss is good, but I don't feel like it's enough. I have TONS of lace rock in my tank - 55 gallons and over 75lbs. + 55lbs pool filter sand- so I don't know that I really need anymore surface for bacteria.

Heard about purigen - anyone know where to get it without going online. Petsmart and my local chain shops don't have it.
