CO2 reactor works so good it killed my fish!

I changed from a Hagen ladder diffuser 5 days ago to a reactor inline with my canister. Woke up this morning to find to my Discus dead and my Glass Cats at the top attempting to stay alive.

On a happier note the plants are doing better than they ever have. I am going to stick a airstone in the tank while the light is off so some oxygen gets put in and CO2 taken out. Atleast I think that would avoid this from happening again, not to happy about the Discus. I am running two DIY bottles, one is the Hagen bottle, the other a ketchup bottle. Should I try only running on bottle with the reactor? My plants are pearling nicely, usually start around 4-5 hours after the light is on. Any way I could make this work better to avoid fish loss?

There isn't even 2L of CO2, neither bottle can hold 1L of water/sugar.

Oh no, sorry to hear about your poor fish. I am terrified to kill my fish in the attempt to help my plants.

Are the fish ok with that much co2 with the lights on? If not, I would only use 1 2L bottle with maybe half the amount of yeast you usually put in. Experiment and add a bit more yeast every time you change it till you find a spot that is best for the plants and the fish. Yah an air pump on a timer at night is a good idea.

During the day my fish are happy as could be, swimming around, being fish. I could put my hand in the tank and pet my Discus without scaring them. I think I will take my CO2 down to one bottle, and get a drop checker from Big Als.

Tank is 39 gallons. I thought you couldn't OD on CO2 either with DIY, apparently I'm wrong. Between my 2 CO2 bottles, there is less than than 2L of total fluid in them. I mix them with only 1/2 teaspoon yeast every two weeks.

How many discus? That's pushing it a bit for discus, unless you do a ton of water changes.

I had 3 Discus, about 2.5-3 inches in size. Did 50% water change one day a week and then 25% change mid week.

Yeah, pretty good in water changes, i think they were fine.

Hmm, 2x 2l bottles OD you on co2 o_O
I think it might've been a different problem, seems like it wouldn't...

x2 that!! I dont see anyway that you could od there...I mean I run 2l on a 10g 100 percent diffusion (allmost) and there is no OD or even fish stress.

I had done a pH check last night, and left some water to stand until tonight. Last night pH was at perfect 7.0. Just checked it and the water in the cup is at 8.2. So according to the formula there was +30ppm CO2 in my tank. That's bad.

CO2 OD seems like the only likely problem that could've done this.

Should I add more plants to use up more of the CO2? I have 5 Cabomba plants, a Amazon sword, about 3 Anubias, and a about 6-8 Jungle Val.
