Experiment

I have a moderately planted ten gallon tank with paintball CO2. My nitrites seemed to fluctuate and my fish didn't seems to happy. I purchased a air pump and small air stone. I have it on a timer and it goes off and on several time through out the day. My fish have never been happier and my plants are doing great even though I sometime have the CO2 and air on at the same time. I don't know if it's the air pump or not but my nitrites seemed to drop to zero as well.

Set the airstone time to run overnight, and turn on the CO2 only when the lights are on. Consider a CO2 system that has a cycloid you could connect to the same time that runs your lights.

+1. plants take in co2 in the day (lights on) and release o2. at night (lights off) they take in o2 and release co2. I run a timer for lights, co2, and an air pump. lights & co2 on one, air pump on another for aeration at night.
