My vals would grow maybe 1/2" then melt at the tip then grow another 1/2" then melt again. This went on for over 6mo. Last month, I added a bunch of floaters and the vals grew 6". They must not like my light

I had vals in a 20 with 4 11w twisty CFL for light. adding no ferts or CO2. I used a few Flourish root tabs and they jumped out of the tank, becoming too tall so that I had to get a bigger tank!
Try the tabs but be warned?
It can lead to more tanks!
No harm to Cichlids, I found much of what I had been told did not fit my Africans.
African cichlid 125 with pressure CO2, EI dosing ferts and all kinds of work!

Vals are fast growers and heavy eaters. They will take fertilizer anyway that they can get it. It really doesn't take that much to get them to take off.

They have been known to melt when using liquid carbon supplemental.

They seem to take forever to grow in a non-CO2 tank until they hit the surface. As soon as their leaves start floating at the top they grow incredibly fast.

What plants are in that tank. My cichlids started to eat my anubias but leave my crypt alone. Also I tried to implant some runners into my 40 gallon grow out and my new tilapia synadere ate them in 2 days. I ordered another box full of vals and plan on growing them outside in a Rubbermaid with soil. Sorry if I spell this wrong but are osmoscte tabs ok to use the ones sold on eBay
