Floating plants stuck in filter?

Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions for this problem:

I have a low-tech tank with some anacharis and a few stray java fern leaves floating around. The fish seem to like them, and I like to think the floating plants help keep the water clean (in addition to the plants that are anchored in the gravel).
The problem is that the floating plants are always getting stuck in the intake tube of the hang-on-back filter. Even if I pull them out every day -- and I'd prefer not to have to do even that -- they always get sucked in after several hours. Doesn't look great, and probably isn't good for the plants or the filter.

Thank you if you have any ideas to share!

Time for a DIY project?

You need to build a fence that stands out a bit from the intake so that the plants get hung on the fence rather than totally sucked into the intake where they stop flow. How about cutting a soda bottle to fit over the intake tube. Cut out the sides as much as you can to let water flow through but leave a "skeleton" framework that you can cover with a mesh fabric of the right size to catch most of the plant debris but not stop water flow.
Another plan? Maybe repurpose a plastic basket like strawberries might come in to work as a fence? Maybe a trip through the fruits and veggies to spot something that would work? A divider sewn together from lighting diffuser ( eggcrate)?

Hide it all behind rocks or wood?

just anchor your anacharis and attach your java fern. they will still take nutrients from the water column.

You could attach the Anacharis to a suction cup & stick it on the tank wherever you want. They can actually look good that way.
